To Straddle or Not To Straddle? How I Made My Friend’s Student Film Set Super Awkward

We all have that story. That story about one moment that defines your life. Okay, not your life — but it’s a moment where you made a serious lapse in judgment that led to heart-stopping embarrassment that you still haven’t forgotten 13 years later.

It was junior year of college. I wasn’t the hotshot theater kid that I was in high school anymore (is there such a thing?) — I opted out of majoring in theater to be a film major instead — so I found a new group: the film club. The club was new and founded by four friends my same year including my friend, John. This group seemed serious about moving to Los Angeles after college to pursue filmmaking and I wanted to be a part of this destined-to-be-successful group.

John was taking a directing class and had to shoot a student film. Luckily, John didn’t hold auditions and just took my word that I was a skilled actress. (He would probably later regret this decision not to audition me.) I was happy to spend a few hours on set and really show my acting ability. I was eager to become a frequent collaborator with someone who I knew was going places. I wanted John to be impressed. I wanted everyone to be impressed.
